The following year, Hidroeléctrica do Coura was nationalized and in 1976 it was integrated into Eletricidade de Portugal (EDP)

Roman Tunnel Couço do Monte Furado

This historic Roman tunnel was intended to divert the Coura river bed for prospecting and mining. The beginning of Rome's dominion in the Galician area during the principality of Augustus (27th c – 14th c) brought profound implications on the way of life of the populations of the Minho region. The Iron Age forts were abandoned throughout the 19th century. I d. w. Along with the castros, the old indigenous social structures and forms of economic exploitation disappeared. Rome imposed a new organization of the territory based on civitates. Civitas was the fundamental territorial entity on which the political, legal and fiscal functioning was based. The lands of the Minho valley, including the Coura valley, belonged to the civitas dos Grovios, whose capital was Tude (Tuy). During the Iron Age, the castro communities produced essentially what was necessary to guarantee their subsistence. In opposition, Rome imposed new ways of exploiting the resources of the subject populations. In this new context, gold was a strategic element, fundamental for maintaining the expansionist policy of the Roman Empire. Throughout the entire Minho region, you can find traces of former mining works, including the Couço do Monte Furado tunnel.
